So here we are, in the midst of a very short training camp, one whole week for teams to get ready for a 48-game sprint to the playoffs. It's crazy if you think about it. It's even crazier if you play for the Islanders.
For all the misfortune that seems to follow the Islanders around, it's often easy to overlook the fact that they employ one of the NHL's true shooting stars.
"How do you think we feel?" Gary Bettman responded to Esiason's displeasure. "It's to say the least disappointing, frustrating."
"(Visnovsky) will not be allowed to play in the KHL without the Islanders' consent," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in an email, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
With the NHL season finally set to start, the Islanders appear ready to give a potential phenom a shot. But while doing so, they may have to move forward without a key acquisition.
"Most importantly to our fans, who love and have missed NHL hockey, I am sorry," Bettman said. "I know that an explanation or an apology will not erase the hard feelings that have built up over the past few months, but I owe you an apology nevertheless."
The NHL's return will bring fierce competition for playoff spots, faces in new places and two legends going for one last glory.
Instead of merely bean-counting, the NHL's caretakers should be looking for ways to bring the game back from the muck it's become.
"I think 48 is most likely at this point, unless the players can expedite their ratification process," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly wrote in an email Monday to The Associated Press.
