It happened on Blake Avenue in East New York around midnight.
Police say the suspect was fighting with his girlfriend when a woman who lives across the hall tried to intervene.
Video from the scene shows there was a sizeable police response.
The NYPD says the suspect "threatened to kill everyone while pointing an assault rifle at a store employee."
