Chicago police say that the group of four unknown males broke the side glass window of the mart and attempted to steal the ATM but failed.
The man was able to get into one house through an open window, walk around, and stole wallets and phones while the people slept.
While the residents slept, the offender walked around the residence taking wallets and cell phones, police said.
The victim was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Illinois Masonic in serious condition.
