Police said the deadly encounter started during an argument over a parking space.
It happened at 4 p.m. Sunday at Fulton Street and Eldert Lane in Woodhaven.
According to police, the suspect approached a 41-year-old man and the two got into a verbal argument, which escalated.
Police said it happened after a dispute, possibly involving someone who was asking to be swiped through the turnstile.
The incident happened near Lefferts Boulevard and Liberty Avenue. It wasn't immediately clear if the victim was on the train or the platform.
"He was looking so bad. He removed his hand, checked his hand, saw the blood and said 'Guys, if I bleed out, make sure my wife and kids know that I love them,'" Tom Brennan said.
Sources said the victim, a police sergeant, was slashed in the face with a 6-inch knife. He was taken to the hospital, and has been released.
Paterson Police detectives along with the Passaic County prosecutor's office are still investigating the double stabbing.
According to police, the suspect allegedly stabbed the woman after she apologized for bumping into him on the platform.
