"We considered everyone who was there on 4th of July a hero just for running and grabbing their children, and doing what they could to stay safe," said Lindsay Meltzer, co-owner of Bright Bowls smoothie shop, where roughly 100 people took shelter after the shooting.
The parade route is still the scene of an investigation as police and FBI continue to comb through the area for evidence.

They left behind strollers, bags of candy tossed to the crowd, wagons, and even a pair of shoes.
"Everybody loved her. She was just kind and selfless and a beautiful person."
From imagery in his music videos to his face tattoos, the accused Highland Park July 4th parade killer apparently had an affinity for the number 47. CBS 2 Investigator Dorothy Tucker reports.
"It makes no sense how anyone could do this to a child, where there are children," said Natalie Lorentz.
Even at 88, Steve Straus still worked five days a week as a stockbroker, commuting from Highland Park to Chicago on Metra.
"Our family is heartbroken and outraged at this loss."
Several GoFundMe pages, community projects, and other events have been organized to help the victims and their families after Monday's mass shooting at the July 4th parade in Highland Park.
The suspected gunman fired 70 rounds at the Illinois community paradegoers, an experience that Alexander Sandoval said was "terrorizing."
"She keeps asking things like, 'Why is that bad guy trying to hurt people?'" Lindsey Hartman said.
Kevin and Irina McCarthy were among the seven killed as a result of the mass shooting.
"Amazing Grace" filled the air as parishioners at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church reflected on their pain.
"People died like 15 yards from us. It was so surreal we didn't know where we were at or where the shooter was."
"There's a lot of healing that's going to have to happen; that is both physical and emotional. There is no question that this experience is something that is going to linger in terms of the trauma," Harris said.
"My concern was that he was going to pull some kind of weapon out."
