Two trucks crashed on I-55 near County Line Road in Chicago's suburbs during rush hour on Thursday, reducing traffic to one lane.
Preliminary information revealed a car was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of traffic when it struck a tow truck – causing it to strike a third car.
A semi-trailer truck swerved after a car cut its driver off – and the chemical drums inside shifted, causing containers of organic peroxide and hydrogen peroxide to leak.
All lanes finally reopened by just before 6 p.m.

The hydrogen peroxide spill happened just after 8 a.m., and the roadway remained closed eight hours later. Kris Habermehl reports from Chopper 2, and CBS 2 Investigator Megan Hickey reports from the ground.
All lanes are closed on the Stevenson Expressway at La Grange Road due to a Level 1 hazmat situation, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation
The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
