Charles Leto, 55, appeared in First Appearance Court on Sunday. He is charged in the shooting that killed 15-year-old Marjay Dotson and seriously wounded 14-year-old Jeremy Herred this past Thursday in Douglass Park, as Shardaa Gray reports.
Day camps start on June 23 and other programs start on June 16.
The Park District started the season with more than 2,000 lifeguard applications, and opening for pools came an entire week earlier than it did in 2023.
The summer lifeguard season starts in May, and runs through early September. At the end of summer, seasonal lifeguards may have the opportunity for full-time jobs.
There are a limited number of time slots still available today at Skinner Park.
You must register for a test time ahead of arrival.
Last year, the city's pools didn't open until early July.
Lifeguards are still needed for beaches and neighborhood pools.
As many are counting down until pools and beaches open, the Chicago Park District is preparing ahead of time by hiring lifeguards.
A one-time $600 retention bonus will be paid to year-round lifeguards, and summer lifeguards, who stay on the job.
The first of several certification sessions began on Monday.
