The fire at the Wauconda complex was under control by Tuesday afternoon, but several units were damaged.
Firefighters were called to the senior living facility in Wauconda after reports of smoke.
They're being recalled vehicles because they have a dangerous defect. The recall impacted 3.4 million vehicles. The companies said they were at risk of catching fire whether the engines were on or off.
The sprinkler system put the fire out, but heavy smoke remained through the building.
Chicago police say two unknown offenders poured an unknown liquid onto the car, set it on fire, and then fled the scene.
The investigation was turned over to the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshall.
"They do a lot for the community. They help the guys who need help."
