Federal prosecutors recommended a 40-year sentence for former Memphis police officer Emmitt Martin in the 2023 fatal beating of Tyre Nichols.
"The official autopsy report further propels our commitment to seeking justice for this senseless tragedy," said attorneys for the Nichols family in a statement.
Lt. DeWayne Smith retired one day before a termination hearing was to be held to determine if he would be fired, records showed.
Authorities are set to release more footage related to the arrest after concluding an internal investigation.
The officers were fired after an internal police investigation into the Jan. 7 arrest of Nichols, who died in a hospital three days later.
Monthly training is offered to the 26 officers in the department.
The disturbing video of Nichols' arrest sparked outrage across the country as questions were raised about the conduct of several police officers and first responders at the scene.
"There is a pathway forward, and I'm going to be tireless and not stop until we do significant things to make Americans safer," the Democratic senator said on "Face the Nation."
In a statement earlier this week, the department said officer Preston Hemphill was under investigation for his participation in the "initial traffic stop" of Nichols "and the use of a Taser."
