A jury found former Sangamon County deputy Sean Grayson guilty of second degree murder for the fatal police shooting of Sonya Massey, but her family said the verdict is a miscarriage of justice.
They spoke after the court adjourned, calling the second-degree murder conviction a "miscarriage of justice."
Jurors began deliberating late Tuesday morning in the murder trial for former Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy Sean Grayson, in the shooting death of Sonya Massey.
Grayson's attorneys during the trial called Massey the aggressor and accused her of escalating the encounter, leaving the former deputy with no other options.
The jury received the case following closing arguments from prosecutors and defense attorneys on Tuesday. Grayson faces three counts of first-degree murder.
