Police said a gunman fired a shot in the air during a robbery attempt, hitting a boy in a nearby apartment.
A toddler was wounded by a stray bullet from an attempted robbery outside his family’s apartment near the University of Illinois Chicago on Saturday.
Fire crews arrived on the scene to treat the victim, who was then taken to UIC hospital, where he died.
Chicago police said the victim was in a fight inside a residence with a 34-year-old man who used a closed fist to strike the 66-year-old about the face.
In each of four incidents, the robber claimed to have a gun and handed the store or restaurant employee a handwritten note announcing a robbery.
The robberies took place in Little Italy and the South Loop.
