The man suspected of stuffing fake bills into two Midtown ATM machines, 26-year-old Jean Carlo Pena, was arrested Monday upon his return to New York.
Authorities believe the bogus bucks were meant to trick the ATM into believing it was carrying a full complement of cash but a bank official said that the machines were able to distinguish most of the fake bills from real ones.
Identical twin brothers were behind bars Thursday night on Long Island, charged in a brazen bank robbery spree. At first police thought the same suspect was robbing and driving the getaway car, until they caught the twins together.
The problem is being called an epidemic of identity theft and credit card fraud with more than 200 victims and counting.
Police say surveillance video shows the suspect dressed as a woman on March 13 with what appears to be a badge on his waist.
