The Big Apple and surrounding area offers players a massive variety of tracks on which to go birdie hunting. The next time you're itching to hit the links, get your swing on at one of these must-play New York City area public golf courses.
Built in 1998 and designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, the Harbor Links Championship Golf Course in Port Washington, NY, is a public course just waiting to be played. With reasonable greens fees ranging from $46-130 depending on the time of day, day of the week and residency status, Harbor Links offers a 6,503-yard, par-72 course with water, trees and many accessible holes for the amateur golfer in all of us.
Here are some steps to follow on how golfers can start to hit their drivers straighter and with longer distance from teaching professional Chris Bernard. When choosing a driver, it's best for amateur players to go for one with 11.5 degrees of loft since this angle leads to more consistency.
Pound Ridge Golf Club is a Pete Dye course, and it's priced like one, too—greens fees are as high as $210, depending on the season and time of day you play the course. However, some golfers would argue this course is worth the money. A par-72 layout that goes anywhere from 5,683 yards to 7,165 yards depending on your confidence level, it's hard to imagine any golfer being disappointed with Pound Ridge.
An older course in River Vale, New Jersey, the River Vale Country Club's course was designed in the early 1930s by Orrin Edward Smith—a Donald Ross collaborator. With very affordable greens fees, the River Vale Country Club offers a par-72, 6,504-yard layout that was voted "Best Place to Play" by Golf Digest in 2008-2009. Most of the holes play very straight, and there is very little water on the course to challenge your swing—but watch out for those trees!
Built in 1916 by the famous Albert W. Tillinghast, the Shackamaxon Country Club course is something else, indeed. Weekend greens fees run between $75-99, and the experience is worth every penny if you can get a member to bring you along as a guest. A very long par-70 course at 6,599 yards after recent renovations, the course features Tillinghast's first island green—the par-4 18th. What a way to end your round!
Putting a golf ball can be an exercise in frustration, but like all aspects of the sport, the player that makes an investment in practice time and sticks with a plan increases the odds that lower scores are in his future. Here are some steps on how to become a better putter from golf-industry veteran and teaching professional Chris Bernard.
