Lawyers for the federal government and the State of Texas were in front of a federal appeals court on Wednesday, arguing over the constitutionality of the state's immigration enforcement bill. SB 4 allows local officers to arrest and charge migrants suspected of entering the country illegally.
A federal appeals court has kept Texas's tough new immigration law on hold while opponents challenge it in court. The law would allow the state to arrest and deport migrants suspected of illegally crossing the border. The U.S. Supreme Court may ultimately decide if the state has that power. Texas has already mounted an aggressive border operation, and because of that more migrants are attempting to cross the border in Arizona, taking a much more dangerous route.
That law would allow law enforcement to arrest, jail, and prosecute migrants accused of illegally entering the US. Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the measure helps law enforcement in his state enforce the law.
The visits came as early voting in Texas wraps up Friday ahead of next week's Super Tuesday primary contest.
