On Friday, a middle school in Gage Park kicked off its festivities for Hispanic Heritage Month. Students hit the stage to perform a re-enactment of "El Grito de Dolores."
Latino Art Beat has grown to give out $5 million in scholarships to aspiring artists as well.
"A little touch of this, of that, right? So that the churro, if you buy it in the morning, it can last until evening and it doesn't become gummy or chewy."
For this week's Foodie Friday, the celebration continues for Hispanic Heritage Month, putting the spotlight on a classic Mexican treat. At a shop frying them up for decades, CBS 2's Jamaica Ponder has more on Don Churro.
In addition to the bonds created, empowering the community through health and wellness has become a priority for the Venados Running Club and other running clubs now springing up.
"We are the first Puerto Rican cultural district in the U.S. We have the largest concentration of Puerto Rican eateries. We also have one of the largest concentrations of public art."
Professor Juan Mendoza said mentorship helped him achieve his dream and want to help the next generation.
The community that inspires Emmanuel Cabrera is the same one that's cheering him on, as if they're along for the ride.
"For me being Latina is about family. It is about people. It is about living life to its fullest. About talking with people, listening to people, celebrating diversity. Being very strong and energetic. I think those are some of the things I also bring to this role and to this work."
Celena Sarillo is the first Latina CEO of the American Red Cross of Illinois. And those who know her say she brings compassion to everything she does. CBS 2's Marie Saavedra has her story.

"If we instill confidence in children at this age that their voice matters, and their voice is going to be key to their future success in education and in life, that's the best sort of education we can give them," Edgar Ramirez said.
Dr. Romo even worked his day job into his logo, finding a new way to get into his neighbor's homes, and using beats as reminders to book those cleanings.
"You just gotta follow the passion and you gotta be tough," café owner Hector Aguille said.
"We have over 35 participating restaurants, and what they've done for you guys is create a delectable, delicious special to entice you guys to go visit them," said Karinn Andréa Chavarria, co-founder of Latin Restaurant Week.
These teens are giving and participating in an effort to build community all month long.
