The driver was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.
The truck struck the rear of the construction trailer that was parked in the left lane of a blocked-off construction site.
Chopper 2 was over the scene where officers say the crash involved two vehicles around 6 a.m.
At least one child was injured in the crash. Four of the victims were in serious to critical condition.
There is no word on if the driver or anyone inside the building was hurt.
Several windows at the building, located at 875 N. Michigan Ave., were smashed out as a result.
Chicago police say the crash happened in the 600 block of West Randolph Street.

The crash happened around 1:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes at Taylor Street.
The shooting happened just after 2 a.m. in the 4100 block of West Congress Parkway.
The victim tried to drive off to escape the gunfire when he hit a curb and then a tree.
Tawfiq Mazakis, 51, of Westchester was charged with aggravated battery and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
Niles Fire Department District Chief Orlando Diaz said they were dispatched to an auto accident on Normal & Greenwood.
The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

"Gets scared, spooked, probably sees the camera, and runs away. Maybe too afraid to deal with it or just didn't want to face reality."
