Both students were attending SIU in Carbondale and were living on campus, according to police.
The Volkswagen had two male and three female occupants. All five were taken to local hospitals in critical condition by the Joliet Fire Department.
The offenders then got into three unknown cars and fled eastbound on Chicago Avenue.
Arriving deputies located a Chevrolet Silverado that had caught fire.
Highland Park police and fire crews were called at 12:37 p.m. to Deerfield and Piccadilly roads, where they found the bicyclist severely injured. The driver was already gone.
Chicago police said a woman in her late 40s was seen running onto the street when she was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound on Western Avenue.
