The department said it believes two groups of people met at Watson Park, and at some point, gunfire erupted.
First responders located the 5-year-old and immediately began lifesaving measures, taking over for family members. The child was transported to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, police confirmed.
The victim's name has not yet been released.
Investigators say the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating as they work to determine what led to the collision.
