Those who've experienced mass violence say the state isn't doing enough to prevent future incidents, while law enforcement officials tell CBS News state law makes it easy for criminals to get guns.
The ages of the victims range from 6 to 56.
Police said officers responded to multiple people shot and confirmed that five victims were shot.
All boys were taken to hospitals in good or fair condition, police said.
"I just hope that we can turn school into a happy place," said junior Stephanie Diaz.
"It is very hard to convince Cooper that he will be happy again. Of course, we are beyond grateful for his survival, and we know others weren't as fortunate, but we want people to know his path/our path will be a very long and hard road," Cooper's family said.
A woman is killed, and four other people were wounded following a shooting in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood Sunday just after midnight.
Grief, advice, and action – that is what came up Wednesday during a virtual townhall meeting for survivors of the Highland Park July 4th parade massacre.
"I wanted to tell you to your face. ... Jesse was real. I am a real mom," Scarlett Lewis told Alex Jones. "...I know you know that, and that's the problem."
The accused gunman is due back in court next Wednesday for arraignment.

Cooper has now been fever-free for 48 hours, and is breathing on his own, and no longer on a ventilator.
