Prigozhin was the longtime leader of the paramilitary group. In June, he turned on his own country, staging a rebellion against the Russian military and marched toward Moscow in a challenge to President Putin.
"No matter the cause of the plane crash, everyone will see this as an act of retaliation and retribution," said one analyst. "And the Kremlin won't particularly counteract this view."
