Attorneys for former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan have filed a lengthy appeal seeking to overturn his corruption conviction, three weeks after he reported to prison to begin serving a 7 ½-year sentence.
Michael Madigan, 83, held the position of House speaker for 36 years.
Last month, Madigan was sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison, following his conviction on bribery, conspiracy, and fraud charges.
With Madigan required to serve at least 85% of his sentence, he will be around 90 years old before he's eligible for release.
Last week, Madigan's wife sent a video pleading with the judge, explaining how she wouldn't know what to do without him around.
Federal prosecutors argued that, not only was Madigan's decades-long reign as speaker "steeped in corruption," but that he repeatedly lied on the stand at his trial.
Jones is accused of asking for a bribe to oppose legislation that would have required a statewide evaluation of red-light camera systems.
In February, a jury convicted Madigan of 10 corruption counts, but acquitted him on seven other charges, while jurors were deadlocked on six other counts.
