The suspect lunged at the resident with a knife before the home owner shot and killed the former.
At 5:25 p.m., Los Angeles County West Hollywood Sheriffs deputies responded to a shots fired call that took place at La Cienega and Beverly Boulevard.
LAPD responding officers found the victim lying on the ground with a gunshot wound.
Police said the victim was shot in the back and taken to the hospital. Laurie Perez reports.
The shooting happened a little after 2:05 p.m. on the 800 block of Lagoon Avenue.
An overnight investigation continue through Tuesday morning as officers maintained their search for a suspect wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred in Beverly Hills.

After an hours-long standoff, authorities fired off a flashbang at the front of the home. The standoff began at about 4:00 p.m.
Arcadia police said that the officer wounded in the shooting was shot in the face. The officer was with the Arcadia Police Department for about six months and has three years of law enforcement experience.
