LAFD said the fire happened at the intersection of 104th and Figueroa Streets. Authorities elevated the seriousness of the blaze to a greater alarm fire as it engulfed both floors of the two-story apartment complex.
It took 55 LAFD firefighters just over 30 minutes to contain the flames, which had broken out inside of a laundry room at the facility. As a result, 20 of the 90 patients at the rehab center were forced to evacuate from the building and shelter in their hospital beds in the parking lot.
According to LAFD public information officer Brian Humphrey, there were at least 80 firefighters on the scene. The department has sent three helicopters to help battle the fire. The Los Angeles County Fire Department has also deployed to help stop the blaze.
