A group from Chicago took a trip to the Vatican to witness the history of the installation of the first American pontiff, Pope Leo XIV.
Tens of thousands were in attendance Sunday in Vatican City, where Pope Leo XIV held his inaugural mass. as Christian Benavides reports, this marks the official start of the papacy for the first-ever American-born pope.
The Vatican makes it official in a matter of hours as Pope Leo XIV’s installation Mass is set for Sunday morning in Rome.
"This celebration is an extraordinary opportunity for people from the city and beyond to come together in shared pride for one of our own," the Archdiocese said in a statement on Saturday.
"We are simply overjoyed," said Sister Barbara Reid, president of Catholic Theological Union in Hyde Park, where Pope Leo earned his Master of Divinity in 1982.
