The gavel is now up for grabs, with no clear frontrunner in sight. As CBS News’ Skyler Henry reports, this also means a lot of important business at the Capitol has been stalled.
"The office of speaker of the House of the United States House of Representatives is hereby declared vacant," said Rep. Steve Womack, who was presiding over the chamber.
