From Gorilla Rilla to Darth Raider, legendary Raiders tailgaters are a cast of characters.
After almost a week of waiting, head coach Dennis Allen makes it official by naming Terrelle Pryor as his starting quarterback in Sunday's finale at San Diego. Pryor hasn't started a game since he won the 2011 Sugar Bowl while at Ohio State. Cornerback Philip Adams is on injured reserve with a groin injury and has been replaced by Brandian Ross.
The 6-9 Chargers have failed to make the playoffs for a third straight year. Head coach Norv Turner will likely not return for the 2013 campaign. San Diego is led by quarterback Philip Rivers, running back Ryan Mathews, receiver Malcom Floyd, and tight end Antonio Gates.
With quarterback Carson Palmer out for the final game with cracked ribs, competition begins in earnest for the starting quarterback job between backups Matt Leinart and Terrelle Pryor. Indications are that Pryor will get more than three plays, but the bulk of the playing time will go to Leinart. The Raiders were also shut out of the Pro Bowl for the first time since 2003.
With the Raiders mired in another losing season, now is the time for quarterback Terrelle Pryor to get his chance to prove to his coaches and the fans what he can do. The Raiders are guaranteed a top five pick in the upcoming NFL draft so there's nothing to lose by playing him. In fact, a loss by the team only helps to ensure a better draft pick.
Raiders rookie receiver Rod Streater has the tools to be the star of the future. He impressed in two straight games vs. Cleveland and Denver where he had 196 yards receiving on seven catches including a touchdown. Streater was undrafted and has made an impact after an impressive minicamp and training camp.
The Oakland Raiders lost again to fall to 4-11 Sunday. Oakland quarterback Carson Palmer was injured during the game and the team didn't play any better with backup QB Matt Leinart. Few positives can be found after the Raiders lost their 10th straight game in the Eastern time zone.
No apparel is Raider worthy if isn't emblazoned with silver and black.
The Raiders once again will be without Richard Seymour. The veteran defensive tackle hasn't played since November 4 with lingering knee and hamstring injuries. Safety Tyvon Branch is questionable with an ankle injury. For the Panthers, running back Jonathan Stewart might play for the first time since week 12. He's been out with a high ankle sprain.
The 5-9 Carolina Panthers are playing some of their best football. Since starting off 2-8, the team has won three of its last four games, led by the 2011 Offensive Rookie of the Year and 2010 Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton. The Raiders are in for a tough challenge.
Oakland Raiders backup running back Mike Goodson will play against his former team, the Carolina Panthers, for the first time since he was traded back in March. Head coach Dennis Allen says he will continue to evaluate younger players in game situations. Kicker Sebastian Janikowski was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after he made 5-of-6 field goals to beat the Kansas City Chiefs.
This weekend, the Oakland Raiders will try to make it two straight wins for the first time since late October. Their final two games are on the road at Carolina and at San Diego. Going inside the numbers from Sunday's win over the Kansas City Chiefs, the Raiders had one of their best defensive games in decades.
Terrelle Pryor, a decorated college football quarterback at Ohio State University, was chosen by late owner Al Davis as his final Raiders draft pick before he passed away in 2011. Pryor hasn't played much since he became a Raider and signed to a four-year contract. He has excelled in high school and college, but will that success include the NFL?
Six straight losses was enough for the Raiders, who finally are back in the win column. Oakland improved to 4-10 and ensured they will not have the top draft pick in 2013. More importantly, the Raiders are looking for some consistency with two games remaining.
