Ross Fire prompts evacuation order in Calaveras County as blaze grows to 20 acres
An evacuation order has been issued for part of Murphys in Calaveras County as firefighters battle the Ross Fire, which has burned an estimated 20 acres, officials said Friday.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said the fire is burning near Canyon Court and has crossed Rolling Meadow Drive. No containment has been reported, but crews said they've laid hoses around both flanks and the fire is holding.
Cal Fire's Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit said the fire had a moderate rate of spread.
The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office issued a mandatory evacuation order for Zone CCU-133, which stretches from the southeast side of Murphys to just east of Angels Camp. You can view a live evacuation map here.
Authorities are asking people to avoid the area and keep roadways clear for fire and law enforcement crews.
The cause of the fire and whether any structures have been damaged were not immediately available.
