The Denver Broncos don't look like the same dominant team from the past few years, but they're still extremely dangerous. With the way the Detroit Lions have played so far, they must not take anyone lightly in search of their first win of the season.
"I think everyone in this building – I mean, hopefully everyone in this state – support Stafford and this team. … I wouldn't pay too much attention to all that BS. That's just someone trying to start something, give someone something to talk about."
"We'll see. Like I said, he's very, very sore. There's no question about that. He got hit far too many times."
To add literal insult to injury, Pro Football Focus now says that Stafford has the second-worst grades of any quarterback through the first two weeks. PFF grades each player in the NFL each week, based off their performances, then those grades are normalized based off individual game situations.
USA Today ran the numbers, and teams that start 2-0 like the Lions are - newsflash - far less likely to make the playoffs. According to the story, "over the past six seasons you have a 4% chance of making the playoffs if you're winless headed into Week 3." And since the NFL expanded to its playoff format in 1990, only 11.2 percent of 204 teams to start 2-0 have made the playoffs that season.
The Detroit Lions played great last week, but couldn't keep it going for the entire game. In week two, the Minnesota Vikings just dominated from the start and the Lions really had no answer for Adrian Peterson whatsoever.
"His second interception, I think might've been affected by that just because he was a little bit numb and I wasn't as aware because it was pretty quick that we were back on the field."
"You get into crunch time, there's an old saying out there, 'Think players, not plays.' And sometimes you've got to find 81, and there's no question about it."
Larry Warford and Caraun Reid both participated in the open portion of the Lions' Wednesday practice, but a couple more players took their place on the injury list.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson says the loss at San Diego felt like a light day of work.
"He hit him pretty flush. He (Stafford) is a tough guy and he was able to bounce back and come back strong enough to lead us down the field and score and put us in position if we get an onside kick, to tie the thing up."
The Detroit Lions were really hoping to open the season in a big way, and they looked to be doing just that halfway through the second quarter. That was when the San Diego Chargers turned things around and absolutely obliterated anything the Lions were trying to do.
Matthew Stafford, "Most likely to wear suspenders and play the jug in a Mumford and Sons cover band."
"I think right now we're farther along at this point than we were last year. Coming in the second year of the offense, getting it down, and Mathew (Stafford)'s a lot more comfortable and familiar with the offense, along with the receivers and offensive line, and we're excited."
"I'm really looking forward to going out there and going against somebody other than my own teammates.
"You got to look at your roster and kind of see where you need depth and in this situation, we had some guys that were injured at different spots, which caused us to carry a few extra guys."
"The difference between good and great is just a split second at that position and I think he's just seeing things a little faster and also knows when he can throw into some looks that last year maybe were a little cloudy that are much more clear to him."
Detroit offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi says despite the Lions' success, he was too aggressive trying to install a new offensive system.
