The young victim was transported to Comer's Children Hospital in critical condition, Chicago police said.
The fatal shooting happened Thursday morning in the South Chicago neighborhood. Ramon Gartman, 33, was discovered unresponsive in the 8400 block of South Commercial at 11:48 a.m. with a gunshot wound to his face, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
David Stewart and Demetrius Pitts had lost a friend to gun violence on a summer day in 2010. They joined a crowd at a memorial site at Kildare Avenue and Jackson Boulevard that evening to mourn the death; but before the night was over, Stewart allegedly opened fire and killed Pitts for failing to "protect" their slain pal.
Police have said 7-year-old Elijah Dace was with a group of children walking near 109th and Loomis strets around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, when two suspects – who were hiding on the side of a garage – jumped out and opened fire.

The teen suspect was charged with one felony count of aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm, police said.
Officers responded to the home in the 200 block of Julia Drive at 1:18 p.m., found the front door open, and no one answered inside, according to a statement from Villa Park police. The officers went inside and found two people who had suffered gunshot wounds, police said. Both were dead at the scene.
Community activist Andrew Holmes said the gunmen were hiding on the side of a garage, and jumped out as Elijah Dace walked with a group of kids near 109th and Loomis streets around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday. The shooters, who appeared to be teens, opened fire, and shot Elijah in the shoulder.
Illinois State Police said, shortly before 5 a.m., someone inside one vehicle fired multiple shots at another vehicle on the Bishop Ford, wounding a 26-year-old man in the second car. A 21-year-old man and 20-year-old woman who also were in that car were not wounded.
The 57-year-old man was inside a first-floor apartment in the 1400 block of East 69th Street about 1:15 a.m. when shots were fired from the hallway and he was hit in the right leg, police said.

About 5 p.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in the right hand and hip in the 1600 block of West Juneway Terrace. An hour later, a 23-year-old man was wounded in a possible drive-by shooting in the 1300 block of West Greenleaf Avenue.
Rasheen Crenshaw, 19, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a gang member. Jeremy Watts, 23, is charged with aggravated battery, resisting a peace officer, and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
About 5 p.m., a male arguing with the victim in the 6100 block of South Bishop Street pulled out a gun and shot him in the left leg, police said.
