Low Sugar Prices Cut Into Crystal Sugar Farmer Payments

Low sugar prices are cutting into payments to farmers at American Crystal Sugar Co. The Moorhead-based cooperative is telling its growers to expect a "massive reduction" in payments for this year's beet crop. In a company blog, American Crystal CEO David Berg says growers will be paid just $38 per ton. Last year, Crystal's farmers were paid more than $68 per ton. KFGO-AM reports Berg says most of Crystal's growers will lose money, and in many cases, "they will lose a lot of money."

Charges: Minn. Woman Operated Day Care While Drunk

A Moorhead woman is accused of being drunk while caring for children at a day care she operates in her home. Fifty-four-year-old Jayne Cote is charged with four gross misdemeanor counts of neglect or endangerment of a child. Clay County Attorney Brian Melton says when police performed a welfare check at the day care on Oct. 2, Cote's blood-alcohol level was 0.18 percent. That's more than twice Minnesota's legal limit for driving of 0.08 percent.
