South Gate residents were protesting in Downey on Saturday over plans for a veterans housing project on Los Angeles County property.
Shots were fired at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, after a road rage incident on the northbound 710 Freeway, north of the 91 Freeway in South Gate. The victim was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved.
Army Corporal Joseph Maciel was assigned to 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Benning, Georgia, according to the Department of Defense.
The man could be seen smoking and drinking while reclined in the driver's seat. Officers shot pepper balls into the truck to get him out, and at one point, he fired shots out of the passenger door at officers.
"Richard he could have a gun!" was the cry that rung out as the homeowner ran after the suspect.
Whittier police responded to an armed robbery at cell phone store the suspects led police on a short pursuit that continued to a South Gate home.
Police say a 40-year-old father was shot and killed inside a smog shop at California Avenue and Southern Avenue in South Gate.
The suspect was described as a known gang member.
Authorities said the suspects were driving a stolen van.
