The suspects, possibly armed with machine guns, fired several rounds and reportedly roughed up a guard.
The day after the fires, a woman matching the suspect's description approached a CBS2 news crew.
The fires spread to six cars. Security video obtained from a neighbor appeared to show a person setting one of those fires.
Police say the suspect threatened his neighbors with a knife.
The suspect and two of his passengers were hospitalized with minor injuries, police said.
A second suspect remains at large.
Neighbors reported hearing up to 20 gunshots.
There were no reported injuries. It was unclear if any of the duplexes were occupied at the time of the fire.
The crash shut down Whitsett Avenue.
