Attorney Gloria Allred said she believes there is currently an open federal investigation into allegations against R. Kelly.
The Cook County State's Attorney would not confirm the grand jury proceedings or the existence of any new investigation. The office had previously encouraged any alleged victims of R. Kelly to come forward.
Kelly has been dogged for years with allegations of sexual misconduct. Through his lawyers, he has consistently denied them. His current attorney, Steve Greenberg, told the AP Allred's comments were "speculative."
"This is the piece of evidence that I think prosecutors have needed for the better part of two decades," Avenatti said in a Thursday interview with CBS News. "In my opinion, it's over for R. Kelly."
