A total of 34 people have drowned in Lake Michigan this year – a figure that accounts for nearly half the drownings in all the Great Lakes, an advocacy group said Thursday.
After taking on water in choppy conditions, a boat had to be guided back to shore by the Coast Guard early Thursday morning in Winthrop Harbor.
Authorities are debating how to keep them out of the Great Lakes, where fishing is a $7 billion industry.

Dr. Eileen Murphy, the owner of the West Wrigley Animal Hospital where the rescued dog was taken, described the moments after the incident.
"The Great Lakes are a vital natural resource to our entire nation, and ensuring American families have access to clean drinking water and a safe waterway system that supports our economy should be a priority for our next president," Pritzker said.
The waves of Lake Michigan can be an obstacle for some, but for others, they can be a challenge worth conquering.
