Major storms Tuesday afternoon flooded I-57 on the Far South Side and ripped down trees in Northwest Indiana.
Northbound I-57 was backed up from Halsted Street all the way to 127th Street due to the flooding Tuesday afternoon. CBS 2’s Jermont Terry reports.
Illinois State Police said two passengers were killed when Isaac Espejel crashed into a concrete median barrier on I-57 while speeding and driving under the influence.
Twenty-three-year-old Isaac Espejel is charged with reckless homicide and drunk driving. He was the only survivor in the crash that killed two passengers.
All lanes of northbound Interstate 57 were blocked on Tuesday morning at Sibley Boulevard.
Mikyael J. Harris, 25, of Chicago was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm.
The 29-year-old driver of the Nissan was cited for violating "Scott's Law," which is the improper passing of a stationary emergency vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
The was taken to an area hospital with injuries in unknown condition. no other injuries were reported.
The roadway was back open by just after 8 p.m.
As of 5:15 p.m., northbound I-57 was closed at the scene – and all traffic was being forced off at 127th Street. Kris Habermehl reports from Chopper 2.
