Their families and President Joe Biden were there late Thursday night as the three arrived at Joint Base Andrews.
The Biden administration announced the release of three U.S. citizens from Russia, including Evan Gershkovich, Paul Whelan and Alsu Kurmasheva, as part of a complex 24-person prisoner swap.
The release comes less than two weeks after a Russian court found Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich guilty of espionage. Paul Whelan was arrested in 2018 when he was in Moscow to attend a friend's wedding and convicted of spying.
The Wall Street Journal calls reporter Evan Gershkovich's conviction on spying charges in Russia "bogus," but it may clear the way for a prisoner swap.
He was arrested in March 2023 while reporting for the Wall Street Journal and is accused of spying for the CIA.
Evan Gershkovich has been held for over a year in a Moscow prison.
Gershkovich is facing espionage charges in Russia that he, the Wall Street Journal, and the U.S. government strongly deny. He faces up to 20 years in a prison colony if convicted.
Evan Gershkovich was detained on March 29 last year on suspicion of espionage. The Wall Street Journal honored him Friday with a mostly blank front page.
Gershkovich was arrested in Russia last March while on a reporting trip there.
"You understand when I say that I can't do an interview, which means that I can't answer any questions," Whelan told a Russia Today reporter.
