The parents of Gabby Petito have obtained a letter written by Brian Laundrie's mother, in which she says she would "show up with a shovel and garbage bags" if he needed to dispose of a body.
A lawyer for Petito's parents called it "an arbitrary number" but that the Gabby Petito Foundation would benefit from whatever amount is collected.
An attorney for the Laundrie family told CBS News they were "appalled."
Attorneys say that one officer of the Moab Police Department has a history of domestic violence that made him "fundamentally biased" and led him to "ignoring evidence that Gabby was the victim."
Gabby Petito's parents hope that hearing her story can help others walk away from domestic abuse relationships.
The 22-year-old was killed by her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, during a cross-country trip last year.
The lawsuit said that until the trip and her disappearance, the families "had a cordial relationship."
Laundrie was found dead in a Florida nature reserve last fall, several weeks after his fiancée's body was discovered in a Wyoming national park, where the couple had been vacationing.
The lawsuit contends that Laundrie told his parents on Aug. 28 that he had killed Petito, 22, his fiancee of about a year at the time. Her body was not found until September 19.
The FBI revealed that a notebook found with the remains of Brian Laundrie "contained written statements claiming responsibility" for Gabby Petito's death. The FBI said it is officially closing its investigation.
Petito died of "blunt-force injuries to the head and neck, with manual strangulation," according to the FBI.
Brian Laundrie died from a gunshot wound to the head and his manner of death was suicide, according to his family's attorney and a local medical examiner. His remains were found in October at a Florida reserve after a weeks-long manhunt following the disappearance and death of his fiancée, Gabby Petito. CBSN's Tanya Rivero has details.
Laundrie died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, his family's attorney said Tuesday.
"It appears that Jashyah was a runaway," acting Essex County Prosecutor Ted Stephens said Friday.
Laundrie's remains were discovered last week in a Florida wildlife reserve next to several of his belongings.
The discovery came after a weeks-long manhunt following the death of Gabby Petito.
