Cherie Townsend, 39, was arrested early Thursday in Victorville and is being held on $1 million bail. She is suspected of killing 66-year-old Susan Leeds of Rancho Palos Verdes at the Promenade on the Peninsula on May 3.
The victim underwent surgery and police say he is now stable at a local hospital. Another passenger on the bus and the driver were not injured.
Investigators say the stabbing appears to be random. The killing has sent shock waves throughout the Palos Verdes Peninsula, which hasn't seen a murder since 2009.
The woman was reported stabbed just after 2 a.m. in her apartment in the 17100 block of Lassen Avenue in Northridge, less than a mile away from the campus of Cal State Northridge. She has since been hospitalized and is now in stable condition.
