Sources tell CBS News a Southwest Airlines staffing shortfall this weekend was a factor in why more than 1,800 of their flights were grounded.
Southwest Airlines has canceled hundreds of flights nationwide, blaming air traffic control issues and the weather, leaving passengers confused and frustrated.
A Southwest Airlines spokesman said the company is "is in the process of resuming normal operations after a brief pause in our flight activity.
Both planes involved in the incident are now out of service for inspection.
Southwest Airlines said Monday it is expanding its all-Boeing fleet with an order for 100 Max jets instead of buying planes from Europe's Airbus.
The orders could indicate that airlines are starting to feel more optimistic about a rebound in travel, which has been devastated by the coronavirus pandemic.
The coronavirus pandemic may have hit the travel industry hard, but Southwest Airlines is expanding.
Southwest said it was only a paperwork issue, and not a flight safety issue.
"Consumers are the winners, because anytime Southwest comes into a market, airfares drop."
The move resulted in more than 173 canceled flights on Friday.
Southwest Airlines said it will seek additional compensation from Boeing as the problem is expected to stretch deep into 2020.
Every plane in Southwest Airlines' fleet is a Boeing 737. But that may not be the case in the future.
Boeing continues to expect approval to fly the jets again by end of this year, although it has consistently fallen behind its own timeline.
After landing and turning off the runway, the plane stopped short of the terminal due to a hydraulic issue, and the 137 passengers and five crew members evacuated the plane using airstairs.
