As the Bears began preparation for their Sunday night match up against the Lions, they did so without Julius Peppers as he works to recover from a sprained MCL.
Reports indicate Bears defensive end Julius Peppers sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during Monday night's 24-13 loss to the Lions.
The final score reads 24-13, but it might as well have been 240-13. As poor as the Lions played, nobody in the Chicagoland thought the Bears had a snowball's chance in pulling that one out after the Lions went up 21-10. The offensive line was outmatched, and almost the entire defense failed to show up Monday night. From there, the rest just fell into place.
With the Packers moving to 5-0, it's imperative that the Bears get a win tonight in Detroit. A loss would leave two undefeated teams at the top of the division. Plus, both of those teams at this point would have tie-breakers against the Bears. Even if you think that winning the division is a fantasy, there's still the issue of the wildcard. If the Bears want to be in that conversation, a win is essential. Here's what I'm watching in this pivotal matchup:
Leading the charge for the physical battle will be Lions defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh, who is notorious for his dirty play. Chicago Bears radio analyst Tom Thayer said the Bears should go shot for shot with Suh.
Lovie Smith evaluates the regular season in four quarters, so let's evaluate Lovie's crew in the same fashion.
It doesn't get categorized as "pretty" but 2-2 looks much better a quarter of the way through the regular season than 1-3 would. The running game was much improved compared to the last two weeks, but there were still plenty of weak spots on both sides of the ball where the Bears need to improve.
The reasons for the Bears' inefficiencies are many, and shared. But, really. Somebody get open.
A 30-12 win in Week 1 -- in a game the Bears entered as a three-point home underdog -- means there was a lot of good shown at Soldier Field on Sunday afternoon. A look now at who really stuck out and a couple of things that still need work.
The Island of Cautious Pessimism is a comfortable place to be. You've been here before, too, at one time or another. I've seen you. I remember faces of like-minded Bears fans who wait with me for the inevitable.

Two of the biggest reasons for the Chicago Bears' success this season were Julius Peppers and Brian Urlacher. And while neither of them won the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year award, they both received votes.
The 2010 Chicago Bears' season went better than the early signs indicated. After a bye week that included a refocusing of the offensive attack, the Bears thrived down the stretch and made it to the Conference Championship game.
The NFC dominated in the Pro Bowl with the help of two Chicago Bears. Four Bears were invited, but only kick returner/wide receiver Devin Hester and defensive end Julius Peppers were able to attend. Linebackers Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs withdrew with undisclosed injuries.
Here's a list of some of the best places to spot celebrities in Chicago. Look out, paparazzi!
Julius Peppers drew a penalty flag for a hit on Green Bay Packers' quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the NFC Championship game. And the penalty for that hit will continue to Peppers' wallet.
Aaron Rodgers has already suffered two concussion this season. And if it wasn't for the new helmet he started wearing, that number might have hit three against the Chicago Bears.
The sense of disappointment is actually a good thing when you think about it. It means that the expectations weren't met. And the expectations for the 2010 season went from six wins to a Super Bowl win.
Julius Peppers and Devin Hester were both named to the 2010 All-Pro team by the Associated Press today.
