Firefighters from several northwest suburbs are on the scene of an extra-alarm fire in a three-story, 20-unit apartment building in Rolling Meadows.
Firefighters responded to the 87th floor at 9:51 p.m., Fire Media Affairs spokesman Juan Hernandez said. The fire was extinguished about an hour later, Hernandez said.
The store closed November 12th after a fire in a storage area. Manager Robin Adams said smoke damaged everything in the store.
Crews responded at 9:34 p.m. to the blaze at a two-and-a-half story home in the 400 block of North Leclaire Avenue, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Juan Hernandez said. A 62-year-old man was found dead after the fire was extinguished.
Icy conditions made firefighters' jobs difficult. They kept trying different hydrants until they found a couple that worked.
The fire started around 8:20 a.m. at Presence Ballard Rehabilitation, at 9300 Ballard Rd. North Maine Fire Protection District officials said the fire was contained to a single unit at the nursing home, and the building's sprinkler system extinguished the flames by the time firefighters arrived.
