Dallas Officer Darron Burks was sitting alone in his squad car in the parking lot of a community center in southeast Oak Cliff when he was shot and killed by a gunman.
Grief and disbelief still hung in the air as people cried, prayed and laughed through more tears.
The Dallas-based nonprofit organization Assist the Officer Foundation is stepping in to help the officers, their families, and fellow DPD officers.
Burks was killed in a shooting in Oak Cliff, and two other responding officers were injured late Thursday night, Dallas police said.
The suspect attacked the officer, according to police, leading to both the officer and suspect suffering gunshot wounds.
Police found four suspects in the car after tracking it down at a northeast Dallas apartment complex in the 9600 block of Golf Lakes Trail.
"I feel that there was likely something far more nefarious planned that day," Chief Eddie Garcia said.
No officers were injured, authorities said. The man's condition wasn't immediately known.
