The GOP battle for the U.S. Senate seat in Texas is shaping up to be a very tight contest.
"This is a Texas-sized investment in the future of our great state," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement.
The contentious Republican primary received a political jolt after Congressman Wesley Hunt entered the race.
The Houston-area congressman is taking on incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton in the GOP primary.
He will seek the Democratic nomination in a field that includes former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, who is running again after unsuccessfully challenging Republican Sen. Ted Cruz last year.
"I believe that character does still matter, and I believe I've demonstrated I could be trusted," Cornyn said.
Cornyn and Paxton have repeatedly taken shots at each other over social media ahead of the March GOP primary.
A recent poll shows the race is getting tighter between Paxton and Cornyn.
The Texas attorney general is running in the GOP primary for U.S. Senate, and in the middle of a divorce from his wife, state Sen. Angela Paxton.
The attorney general's race is a rare open seat in the state, as Ken Paxton was elected the 51st attorney general of Texas in 2014.
