North Texas political shuffle: Dallas GOP chair resigns, AG candidates clash, and Fort Worth eyes $8

Dallas County GOP Chair Allen West resigned Wednesday following party backlash over his shift back to countywide voting for the May runoff. In the race for Texas Attorney General, Democratic candidates Nathan Johnson and Joe Jaworski are challenging the constitutionality of state laws on school choice and the Ten Commandments. Meanwhile, Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker is pushing for an $845 million bond package on the May 2 ballot to fund citywide infrastructure and public safety projects.

A closer look at school choice applications by the numbers, Dallas City Hall controversy

The Texas Comptroller's Office said it received 274,183 applications to take part in the state's new taxpayer-funded school choice program called Texas Education Freedom Accounts. State representatives discuss what they think about the statistics following the conclusion of the application process. Some Dallas city council members say they were caught off guard, others express outrage over Dallas City Hall conversations had by City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert. Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Gay Donnell Willis defended Tolbert, saying, "Our city manager is our chief executive officer."

Texas to use newly drawn congressional maps; Gov. Abbott shares top priorities for re-election

A redistricting ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court allows Texas to use the newly drawn 2025 Congressional maps for the upcoming March primary and for the all-important midterm elections next year. Gov. Greg Abbott discusses his top priority of property tax reduction in his plan for re-election to a record 4th term. He also discusses his thoughts on casino gambling in Texas. Rep. Jasmine Crockett will reveal whether she's running for U.S. Senate, and all signs point to her joining the race.
