Debates over data centers in rural Texas and affordability in the U.S. Senate race

Opposition seems to be growing — particularly against data centers that will be built to support the increasing demand for AI. Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico campaigned in Dallas early last week and said his continued focus on costs and affordability will help him win in November. But Republican U.S. Senate candidate Ken Paxton's campaign criticized Talarico's record. A white paper by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas concludes the record number of illegal immigrants during the Biden administration had a big impact on housing prices, rents, and employment growth.

Dallas County GOP Chair Allen West resigned Wednesday following party backlash over his shift back to countywide voting for the May runoff. In the race for Texas Attorney General, Democratic candidates Nathan Johnson and Joe Jaworski are challenging the constitutionality of state laws on school choice and the Ten Commandments. Meanwhile, Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker is pushing for an $845 million bond package on the May 2 ballot to fund citywide infrastructure and public safety projects.

A closer look at school choice applications by the numbers, Dallas City Hall controversy

The Texas Comptroller's Office said it received 274,183 applications to take part in the state's new taxpayer-funded school choice program called Texas Education Freedom Accounts. State representatives discuss what they think about the statistics following the conclusion of the application process. Some Dallas city council members say they were caught off guard, others express outrage over Dallas City Hall conversations had by City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert. Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Gay Donnell Willis defended Tolbert, saying, "Our city manager is our chief executive officer."
