"Please continue to pray for our efforts," the Sherman Police Department said in a social media post.
Most of the animals died of smoke inhalation, officials said. They included birds, chickens, hamsters, dogs and cats.
Officers responded to the 4100 block of Surfside Ct at about 12:10 p.m. after a resident reported seeing someone floating in the water.
He was treated by medical personnel at the scene and died shortly after their arrival.
