Workers got started bright and early at 5 a.m. to make thousands of hoagies for food banks and the public.
The emergency funds added to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are coming to an end Wednesday.
The auto company plans a convoy of 85 Toyota Tundra pickup trucks loaded with food. Local food bank Philabundance is getting about 325 tons.
Philabundance is purchasing over 300 tons of food with donations from local Toyota dealers.
The Kitchen School at the Food Bank of Delaware trains people with disabilities on transitioning to the workforce.
But this year brought challenges unlike years past.
The Food Bank of South Jersey says in 2021, they had 18,000 requests for turkeys. This year, they received 22,000 requests.
The location will be open two days a week for produce, shelf-stable food and protein pick-up.
Across the country, charities say there is a rise in the number of people needing help.
When the school is out, many students miss out on a significant source of nutrition: school breakfast and lunch.
This holiday season, help out the less fortunate by donating to one of these area food banks.
If you are now one of the lucky ones whose power has NOT gone out, and you don't need all that stuff, local food banks hope you'll consider them.
High School students from the Philadelphia region went head-to-head over a two-week period to collect tons of food for the "Great Food Fight" to benefit Philabundance.
ShopRite is donating 100 cases of turkeys to two local food banks.
"So we're seeing waves - where those food stamp benefits run out and people are coming to the cupboards at the end of the month," Philabundance president Bill Clark says.
In this economy, local food banks are being pressed to the limit. On Wednesday a New Jersey official took time out to visit a rolling delivery unit.
Local food banks say they're still waiting for $2 million in funding from the Delaware River Port Authority, approved by the agency more than a year and a half ago but subsequently put on hold.
