A man was found dead after a house fire Wednesday afternoon in the South Side Calumet Heights neighborhood, police said.
The fire started around 5 a.m. in a single-family home in the 7900 block of West Gunnison Street. Four adults and four children were trapped inside when firefighters arrived, and had to be rescued from the house.
Four police officers were injured early Wednesday, when they ran into a burning apartment building to help people escape in west suburban Berwyn. A resident also suffered serious burns.
Crews responded about 10:30 p.m. to the blaze at the 18-unit building in the 9800 block of Sayre Avenue. Firefighters were met by heavy flames showing from the back of the second story and spreading to the roof. A second alarm was called for the fire due to the sloppy winter weather and a frozen fire hydrant.
Firefighters were on the scene of a fire, following an apparent explosion in north suburban Mundelein.
