The fire started around 11:30 p.m. at a home in the 600 block of North Humphrey Avenue. A 6-year-old boy and a 54-year-old man were trapped and unconscious in a second floor apartment for some time until fire rescue crews in oxygen masks could reach them.
A plea agreement with prosecutors is being negotiated, with the goal being having Brian Howard do his time in a federal prison offering mental health treatment, defense attorney Ronald Safer said.
A neighbor saw smoke coming from a home in the 500 block of Claim Street about 7:30 a.m. and called 911, according to a statement from the Aurora Fire Department.
