Next month, the Academy's board will vote whether to discipline Smith. Punishments may include suspension or expulsion.
"I love my friend Chris Rock and believe he handled it like a pro," Schumer said.
Smith publicly apologized to Rock in an Instagram post, stating that his behavior was "out of line" and "not indicative of the man I want to be."
This year 15.36 million people tuned in to the event compared to the 9.85 million viewers last year.
