Police said the suspect remained at the scene, was taken into custody by the officers, and is cooperating with the investigation.
It's the second knife attack on a Japanese child in the country in just a few months.
The Department of Children and Family Services is involved in this investigation to guide police on exactly what to do next.
Three people were killed in the attack. Eight other people were wounded and five of them are in critical condition. Police say the attacker stabbed the victims at random in a large crowd.
