The City Council will now reconvene Friday afternoon for a final vote on an ordinance giving the mayor's budget team greater spending authority during the pandemic.
Tuesday marked one month since the stay-at-home order to fight the novel coronavirus went into effect in Illinois. Now, there are indications from both Gov. JB Pritzker and Mayor Lori Lightfoot that the order might be extended.
The 23-10 vote by the Budget Committee came only after the mayor's office agreed to scale back the ordinance, and after Tuesday's virtual meeting was delayed for an hour so the mayor rally support.
"There's still a few more i's to dot and t's to cross. But we have a deal. And I believe we'll pass it today," Schumer said in an interview with CNN.

Schools will be closed the remainder of the academic year under the safer-at-home order that will be in effect until May 26. Golf courses will be allowed to re-open, but club houses and pro shops will remain closed.
Since daily briefings began March 9, Pritzker has made trips in mid-March to Springfield and the Murphysboro area. He closed nonessential businesses and on March 20 issued a stay-at-home order. He has not appeared publicly outside Chicago since.
